The Dynamic cone penetrometer is used for the rapid, in situ measurement of structural properties of existing road pavement constructed with unbound materials.
The design of the DCP is similar to that described by Kleyn, Maree and Savage (1982); it incorporates an 8 kg weight dropping through a height of 575 mm and 60° cone having a diameter of 20 mm. with the standard DCP measurements can be made down to a depth of approximately 850 mm or when extension shafts are used to a recommended maximum depth of 2 m.
Readings are usually taken after a set number of blows, changing the number according to the strength of the layer being penetrated. A typical test takes only a few minutes, therefore the instrument provides a very efficient method of obtaining information that would normally require the digging of test pits.
The penetration hammer assembly consists of 8 kg hammer, hammer shaft, anvil with plastic plate coupling for ruler and handle.
ACCESSORIES
Hammer:
Weight of hammer 8 kg, having free-fall of 575 mm.
Top & Bottom rod:
Top & Bottom rod is 16mm dia. and made of non magnetic stainless-steel.
Penetration measuring Scale:
A scale of 1.0m height with 1mm readability have attached with a steel box of 40mmx40mm made by stainless-steel. The steel box is attached with base plate rigidly.
Base plate:
Made of mild steel of rectangular size 200mmx150mm and thickness not less than 25mm. There is a hole of 22mm dia. for passing the DCP cone conveniently.
Cone:
The cone have 60° angle, 20 mm diameter and made of hardened material. The cone is replaceable and interchangeable. After fixing there is not be any gap between the cone and the rod.
Anvil & Upper Handle:
Its made by heat treated non magnetic steel. All threads/joints should be of proper quality/type.
Dumping Washer:
It is made by non magnetic stainless-steel and fixed with the anvil. There should be a hole of 42mmx42mm for passing the steel box conveniently.
Wooden Box:
250x1150x250 mm size are good quality smooth finishing a wooden box.
